We will continue to update the progress of The Rock on this site, but we ask that you spread the word and consider being a part of our efforts through our One Square Foot Campaign or at whatever level you feel lead.
Who We Are
The Rock has been the dream and passion for Alice Cooper and the rest of the Solid Rock team for the past 12 years. The time has finally come to make that dream a reality. To build the facility that you can see throughout this site, Solid Rock needs to raise 7.3 million dollars. The 29,000 sq ft facility (The Rock) will be located on the campus of Grand Canyon University at 33rd Ave and Camelback. We will reach out to the entire Valley of the Sun, working together with local churches and youth organizations, to deliver coordinated concerts and large scale events geared towards teens and kids alike. We will work with G.C.U. to provide after-school computers, reading, music, and other educationally needed programs along with sports and recreational activities. We will make this a reality.
With programs designed by teens for teens and run by Christian staff and volunteers, our kids will have the chance to make the right choices in life. In addition to offering a basketball court, a rock climbing wall, and a coffee house, The Rock will minister to teens through the arts. Music is a vital part of teens' lives and the best way to connect with the youth today is through their music. Unfortunately, so many public schools have had to let vital programs like music and dance go due to lack of school funding. The Rock will cultivate a love of the arts, like musical instruments, voice, drama, and dance, to inspire and challenge kids to choose artistic excellence instead of drugs, guns, or gangs. There will be programs that teach teens about sound board mixing, lighting, staging and production. Who knows what amazing performers, choreographers and producers might come from The Rock?
Features
Programs / Amenities - Arts
The Music Foundation
"The Rock" will provide teens the opportunity to learn how to play an instrument from professional teachers and, in addition, many of Alice Cooper's friends in the music industry. Whether in person or via interactive computer feeds, these artists and instructors will not only teach kids how to play an instrument, but also about the power of music.
Outreach Concerts
The concerts will serve as a main attraction and introduction to "The Rock." Due to the unique design of the facility, "The Rock" will be able to host a variety of entertainment genres from small garage bands, drama productions and dance recitals to big name groups such as Alice Cooper and Michael W. Smith. This venue will provide opportunities to entertain and engage the local teen community.
Staging/Lighting/Sound Training
In addition to teaching teens to play music and providing a state-of-the-art performance venue, "The Rock" will provide teens with an opportunity to make a career in the music field. This program will train kids how to set-up and run production from start to finish. Students will be given the chance to learn staging, lighting, sound and production. Armed with these skills, participants will have a real chance to succeed in the modern music industry.
Recording Studio
The recording studio takes the occupational production training one step further by teaching teens how to mix and record music. It provides opportunity for musicians to record their music, cut a CD and market their work. The recording studio will equip graduates with the vocational skills necessary to be competitive in the music industry.
Live Mic
Live Mic simply provides a venue for kids to share their work, enjoy some attention or just be goofy. Located on the stage of the Coffee House, Live Mic allows teens to express themselves in whichever form they choose.
Computer Lab
The Rock will feature a full service computer lab with high-speed internet, enabling teens to be on a level playing field in school and afterward. Training, research, learning, homework, web and graphic design will be available through daily classes, workshops, and tutoring. Because so many teens in the nearby neighborhoods do not own a computer, this lab will give them access to tools that might not otherwise be available to them. The ultimate goal of The Rock is to have teens contribute to the creation, design and maintenance of The Rock's Web identity.
Coffee House
The Coffee House is a place where teens can grab a snack, catch up on homework or just hang out with their friends. This is where the Live Mic will be featured.
Game Room
The game room will provide pool tables, ping pong and other interactive games, encouraging socialization.
Tutoring
"The Rock" will provide extensive tutoring programs for junior high and high school students in the area. Grand Canyon University provides a large pool of qualified students who are eager to help struggling teens reach their potential.
Partnership
Collaboration with Grand Canyon University's faculty and students is an integral part of The Rock's program outreach. Partnering with faculty to develop the most relevant and effective curriculum available, and utilizing the students as interns and outreach partners, will enable teens to benefit from some of the most successful learning models available.
